Taulman3D A920GF Nylon - 1lb, 1.75mm
The automotive industry has not taken on a greater percentage of filament based 3D printing due to the lack of a material that meets temperature and “cold flow” requirements. Creep/cold flow or the ability of a material to hold up to the constant temperature cycles of an automobile is a primary requirement. Today, while we see plastics bolted directly to our engines and other mechanical components under the hood, what we are looking at is a 30% Glass Filled Nylon 6,6.
Nylon 6,6 has a medium tensile, but also has a heat deflection temperature of around 110C. The 30% GF helps to reduce cold flow to an acceptable level. Without the GF, parts would become dimensionally unstable in a smaller number of thermal cycles. Nylon 6,6 is an injection molding thermoplastic not an “extrusion grade material” as it would easily crack if extruded in a 1.75mm or 3mm line.
With taulman3D Alloy 920GF, the automotive industry can move forward with a greater percentage of filament based printing using a material that meets both cold flow and temperature requirements. In addition, as the base polymer is an Alloy 910 material, there is a significant increase in tensile strength. The percentage of Cut Glass Fiber is controlled such that elongation is still in the 8% range needed for high vibration components. The quality of Alloy 920GF is tightly regulated in that the compounding is performed at the Chemical mfg shortly after the batch process. This insures a constant compound from start to end of a spool as well as from spool to spool over years of printing.
